OK, time for the reality check.

Renee just got laid off. They eliminated her entire department at NorTel.

I guess the job hunt can begin when she adjusts to the shock of the layoff. I know how it goes – it happened to me in 1999. Her severance package is a little better than mine – I got unemployment, an NDA, and a final paycheck. She gets her pay for a few more months, and the insurance package until June.

And so it goes.

About Kevin Sonney

Kevin Sonney - who, contrary to popular opinion was NOT raised by wolves - grew up in central North Carolina. He fell into the technology field by accident in 1991, when he gave up the wild and crazy lifestyle of an on-air AM radio DJ to become a mundane technical support monkey. The technology industry has never really recovered from this. Kevin has worked for such names as IBM, Red Hat, webslingerZ, and Lulu Technologies (we won't mention the ones that didn't survive the experience). He currently works as a Linux Administrator for Apptio. In his spare time he rescues stray animals and plays video games with his two sons. His wife, we're sad to say, helps him get past the really hard bits. Kevin is still not very mundane, he just got better at hiding it.

Look on the bright side: she gets a paid vacation to spend a lot of time with your son, revise her resume, and figure out what to do next. The last time my wife was laid off, she took the chance to go visit friends for a week to decompress.
(The last time I was laid off I called a friend who’d been trying to get me to do a project for him part-time, and had a two-month work from home contract by the next morning, but then I don’t really get this whole vacation thing).
