Cool stuff…and not so cool stuff

Cool stuff : I have DVD playback on Linux. Sort of. So now I know it’s possile, I just ahve to wait for the software to mature. My choice at the moment? The Linux Video Project

Not so cool stuff : We didn’t get the home equitly loan, mostly because of the estimate and some new requirements from the bank. The estimate problem was because it had the wrong info on it. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

Cool Stuff : Ray actually used the potty today! The end of diapers is in sight…at least, for this kid.

Not so cool stuff : renee is still waiting to hear back about the one job. It’s driving her nuts. Grrr…

That’s it for now…

About Kevin Sonney

Kevin Sonney - who, contrary to popular opinion was NOT raised by wolves - grew up in central North Carolina. He fell into the technology field by accident in 1991, when he gave up the wild and crazy lifestyle of an on-air AM radio DJ to become a mundane technical support monkey. The technology industry has never really recovered from this. Kevin has worked for such names as IBM, Red Hat, webslingerZ, and Lulu Technologies (we won't mention the ones that didn't survive the experience). He currently works as a Linux Administrator for Apptio. In his spare time he rescues stray animals and plays video games with his two sons. His wife, we're sad to say, helps him get past the really hard bits. Kevin is still not very mundane, he just got better at hiding it.

LiViD unfortunately seems to be moving really slowly =\ My current DVD playback solution of choice is Xine for which there are rpms with decss included (not that I would know anything about that ;) at http://freshrpms.net. Also, msw was pretty impressed with videolan, but I was less so.

It’s all less than perfect on this system. Of course, I had to use a hacked tdfx_drv.o to get a picture out of OMS, or to get the v3tv driver to work properly with xawtv, so I’m sure *SOME* of it is in X.

It’s jumpy, though, in any case. So, I gotta wonder if I don’t need to hdparm fine tune some things…

  3. katzj says:

Oh right, you have a Voodoo. tdfx has consistently broken XVideo support which makes a HUGE difference in how well the various DVD playing apps work (it tends to provide at least a minor level of hardware support for nice things like, oh, say scaling ;) I think that xvideo may be finally fixed though for the voodoos in cvs xfree, but I’m not certain.

  4. alchemist says:

Yeah, and the “patched” version looks like it breaks loki games.

Am I brave enough to use a CVS Xfree? Doubtful. *grin* Maybe a rawhide build, but not a CVS one *grin*

  5. katzj says:

Well, Mike kept saying he was going to try to get around to doing it… If I don’t see anything soon, perhaps he needs to be bugged :P

  6. alchemist says:

Oh boy, and excuse to bug MSW! Maybe i’ll get off my ass and look at irc tomorrow to do just that *grin*

  7. katzj says:

Nah, Mike Harris, not msw. msw is busy with “other things” ™. “Other things” which should be very cool, but “other things” nonetheless :)
