Office Politics and Reviews. Joy.

Got called into my manager’s office on Friday. My direct reports-to manager, not the guy who supervises the actual group I work with.

See, performance reviews are being done company wide. Yes, performance reviews. At RHAT. And it seems that mine would have some less than acceptable results if it were done now. I’m like…huh? So we go over it, and I can see where some of these might be “work on” issues, but not “2 out of 5” issues. And then I wonder how much is political, and how much isn’t.

So he wants to delay my actual review 30 days so we don’t have to go through a “Personal Development Plan” – a 45-day process that would *REALLY* impact my job, as it entails weekly updates as to my progress, my manager listening in on calls…crap like that.

I’ve been warned twice not to “learn” too much from certain reps. That is, don’t use these people as a resource in gaining selling skills. Hmmm. And there is another issue, which was also mentioned in passing, where I *DID* forward up info that would indicate an outside rep breached NDA with a customer. And then it hits me, yesterday – politics. None of the things we went over were horrid, unless you mix in politics.

So I’ve come up with an action plan to improve the areas that were specifically mentioned. You’ll see more of this in the public side of things. And then I’ll have to play the game. Head down. No hanging out with L for a bit. Spend some time with the “performers.”

Worst case, and I end up on the PDP, I’ll have to ask them the following important questions :

– How many people (no names!) have been through this PDP?
– How many of those people (no names!) made it all the way through?
– How many of *THOSE* people are still with RHAT? (Again, no names)

That way, I’ll know what my chances are. because if the answer to either of the last two is zero, I’ll know what to do from there.

30 days until I have to even consider that. So let’s get it on. Play the game, watch my back, follow the plan. Don’t trust management. At least, be selective about it.

    The thing that sucks is that a lot of the petty sjhit I was aware of, but not warned on. if you think I’m doing somethign wrong, tell me. If you think I could use improvement here or there, tell me. Tell me first, give me a chance, before pushing it up to management. That way, I can improve, and I don’t have to worry about watching my freaking back all the time.

    Y’Know, people keep comparing RHAT to Office Space. it’s a bit of black humor around the office. But fuckall if it isn’t horribly true in some cases. oh, the venting I need, but not here.

    No, not here. I trust the people on this post, but still….

    I deal with this shit from my company all the time. Ever since the “MOF” group came into our company 3 months ago things have not been the same. They make us all do sheets that calculate what we do every day. We also now have a monthly performance review. It’s all complete politics and it sucks. I know the only reason they are doing this is to see where we can reduce headcount. I’ve learned to just keep my mouth shut and not trust any management. Two of them have fucked me over for their own personal gain. The corporate world is bs and I’ve just learned you gotta play the game to survive. Shut up, work, smile, and nod your head. I hope things get better for you on all accounts :o)

    And I can sympathize because I have so totally been there. UNC did that to me several times.

    How could Red Hat do that? They should be ashamed of themselves! Filthy politics, rewarding the snakes-in-the-grass and punishing the good honest workers.
