An open mind

This morning, in between interuptions from the kids, I managed to watch Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West

Watch this movie. Draw your conclusions. Discuss.

About Kevin Sonney

Kevin Sonney - who, contrary to popular opinion was NOT raised by wolves - grew up in central North Carolina. He fell into the technology field by accident in 1991, when he gave up the wild and crazy lifestyle of an on-air AM radio DJ to become a mundane technical support monkey. The technology industry has never really recovered from this. Kevin has worked for such names as IBM, Red Hat, webslingerZ, and Lulu Technologies (we won't mention the ones that didn't survive the experience). He currently works as a Linux Administrator for Apptio. In his spare time he rescues stray animals and plays video games with his two sons. His wife, we're sad to say, helps him get past the really hard bits. Kevin is still not very mundane, he just got better at hiding it.

I wonder what kind of film you could make by turning this around. Showing footage of Christian extremists spewing their insane crap. Showing the damage done by American weapons. Showing footage of some of our more “gung-ho” soldiers and sweeping footage of our war efforts backed by a tense, dramatic score.

I wonder what percentage of Christians in the US would back more extreme actions on our side.

At times this documentary seems to present the “extremist islam” viewpoint as “those evil Americans are trying to destroy us and our way of life.” Have our leaders not said the exact some thing about them?

I’m not dismissing the threat, but this is hardly a unbiased documentary.

Not “those evil Americans” but “Those evil non-Muslims.” America isn’t alone, and the Military and the Administration seem to *STILL* be aproaching this with the mindset of the Vietnam War.

Some commentary on the American left also makes me wonder if this isn’t a “damned if we do, damned if we don’t” situation. (See http://tinyurl.com/g8zvw Article “RMA 1.0”)

The victory conditions for either side aren’t symetrical. The Radical Islam jihadist is victorious as long as he kills even one of the kaffir. What’s the victory condition for the rest of us?

How interesting, the video is no longer available.

    “Do No Evil” my ass…

Hmmm, interesting. The movie is no longer available. I wonder why?

You lost me at “victory conditions”, a non-sequitor.

Keep in mind, human life is not valuable. Our society, along with most others, continues to perpetuate the idea of human life being sacred, murder being the greatest crime, etc. Yet in all societies, there are always exceptions to these. Not just legal exceptions but social ones. Plus there’s the general delusion that a species that has been steadily expanding in population for centuries and now totals over 6 billion is somehow “rare and precious”.

Frankly, I think you’d find something child pornography to be less exceptable on a global scale than killing. But the Feds spend only a tiny fraction of their resources to combat it…
