General Health Update

So a quick update on my general health, since that’s been an issue for the last 8-9 months :

  • I’ve got my blood sugar levels under control, with a minimum dose of metformin daily and diet. This rocks.
  • The tooth I had removed a few weeks back has healed completely. This also rocks, but it has taken some getting used to the missing molar on that side.
  • I’ve been three days without smoking. So far, so good.
  • I’m down to 184 lbs as of last night. This is UP from my low a few weeks back of 181, but still, some fluctuations are normal. I’ve basically lost 30 lbs, and it’s staying off. Stopping smoking may mean a short-term gain, but I am confident that I’ll lose it again. On a related note, I need a new, smaller belt.
  • My intestines and I have come to an agreement, and for now they are not intent on killing me. I REALLY miss spicy food, but I suppose it’s worth it.

So overall? I’m good. I feel great. At some point, my system is going to purge all the crap in my lungs and sinuses, and that’ll SUCK, but it’s worth it.

About Kevin Sonney

Kevin Sonney - who, contrary to popular opinion was NOT raised by wolves - grew up in central North Carolina. He fell into the technology field by accident in 1991, when he gave up the wild and crazy lifestyle of an on-air AM radio DJ to become a mundane technical support monkey. The technology industry has never really recovered from this. Kevin has worked for such names as IBM, Red Hat, webslingerZ, and Lulu Technologies (we won't mention the ones that didn't survive the experience). He currently works as a Linux Administrator for Apptio. In his spare time he rescues stray animals and plays video games with his two sons. His wife, we're sad to say, helps him get past the really hard bits. Kevin is still not very mundane, he just got better at hiding it.

Congrats on losing all the weight! I’m working on that myself right now. Any suggestions?

I’d say 90% of what I’m doing is changes to my diet. What’s working for me :
    – Cut out as much high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugars as possible
    – portion control! I have 5 small-ish meals a day vs 3 large ones.
    – reduce/limit sodas, even diet ones. Lots of water, coffee, and (hot) tea
    – get up and walk around every so often.
    – Lower starches, more protein, more veggies/fiber
    – be aware of what’s IN the food you eat.

I’ve certainly been reducing the number of heavily processed foods I’m eating, and cutting HFCS helps a LOT. That shit is everywhere. I’ve actually been eating a lot more “natural” and “certified organic” foods since those usually contain less added sugar (if any at all). Annie’s Natural brands are VERY good about that, and vegetarian/vegan friendly.
