  • The Process

    Posted on by Kevin Sonney

This is probably more for me than anyone else, but I figure why not – here’s how I put our various shows together.

I’m got a 17″ MacBookPro running OSX 10.6 that we record everything on. We record and edit all of it in GarageBand.

In terms of microphones, for KUEC we use a Blu Snowball, and for In The Evening I use a C-Media headset.[1]

All pictures are taken with my iPhone 3GS.

The process for KUEC goes something like this : we set up the Mac and Snowball in the kitchen, push the record button, and let it run. As you may have noticed, it can be a bit “raw” because of this, but that (we hope) is part of it’s charm. When we’re done recording, we retire to the bedroom with my laptop, and listen to the show – usually to find the “money quote” for the episode title, and to make sure there aren’t any serious technical issues with the raw recording.[2] While we listen, I pull the photos off of my phone, pick the best “group shot” for the libsyn post, and upload all of them to flickr.

When we’re done listening, we update the metadata on the file, export it to mp3, and upload everything to libsyn.

ITE is a little more involved. I spend a few hours (no, really) going through my iTunes library, piecing together the playlist, usually in blocks of 3-5 songs. I then sit down in GarageBand and record the intro, the outro, and the bumps between songs. I export those to the playlist in iTunes, make sure everything is in the proper order, and then I burn the whole kit to a CD.

Why a CD? Two reasons – the first is because some of the songs are in formats I can’t easily convert directly to mp3[3]. The other is so that I can do a single rip to the 128Kbit format the stream requires, with the MP3 tags populated. After it’s been re-ripped at the proper bitrate, I use the program EasyTag to verify the files names & tags are correct, before sending them off to the stream for eventual play.

Once it’s on the stream server, I sit back down in GarageBand and do the podcast mix. Same songs, same order, but I can do a bit cleaner job on the actual transitions that the system that does the stream. Once that mix is complete, I update the metadata and export to MP3. The final step is to post it to the ITE site proper, which uses PodPress for the handling of the media files and the matching posts.

And now I have been a good tech and documented my processes so if I’m ever hit by a truck, someone else can duplicate it.

And you guys can tell me where I can be a bit more efficient in the various processes.

[1] Given the sensitivity of the Snowball and the acoustics in the office, it’s not practical to use when recording the voice-overs for the music show. I’ll probably experiment more with the Snowball as things mature – it is an AWESOME device, and I feel bad using a $25 headset when I have the Snowball….
[2] This is why we were surprised when someone complained about “clicking” on a couple of shows. Still not sure what was up with that, but I’m hoping it’s gone now after some adjustments.
[3] Some legacy stuff I bought when the ONLY iTunes option was protected m4p files, which iTunes absolutely refuses to convert to mp3 without this intermediate step.

  • KUEC Now on Miro

    Posted on by Kevin Sonney

So in my efforts to finish any other Podcasty things I can this weekend, I added Kevin and Ursula Eat Cheap to the Miro Guide. If you happen to be a Miro user, you should be able to find us in there very soon.

Also, I added a handy iTunes and a handy Miro button to the sidebar of the KUEC site.

    Here’s the Miro Button :

Any Miro Users out there? How does it work for you?

Alchemist In The Evening Now Has it’s own Website

On Thursday night, after playing around with podPress, I re-edited the first ITE Episode into a podcast-like file, and punched it up onto the new site. And then on Friday I did two more, and by Saturday I had it DOWN and was a madman of mixing, uploading, and re-posting. And aside from one episode that’s being a BITCH to mix (I think one of the source files is fubar, so I have to find a new copy), all the archives are now available.

The only question that remains now is if I should crosspost the weekly episodes here or not. Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

  • Something I know you’ve been waiting for

    Posted on by Kevin Sonney

I figured today would be a good day to do some work on Sonney.com. I wanted to clean up the sidebar a little, get the showtimes up, populate the event calendar, and a couple of other updates.

While I was in there, I figured I’d take a look at the new MultiSite Support – something that was a bit complicated in WordPress 2.x. It’s included by default in WordPress 3.x, and I wanted to give it a once-over. In a word: Nifty. It’s now REALLY easy to spin off additional sites on a single domain. They also did a really nice piece of work on the admin side, so that you can set “always on” plugins and everything. There is even a plugin for domain mapping, so you can map “external” domains to the spin-off site.

Well, I needed a site I could test it out with. I also need a site to do a proper podcast for Alchemist In The Evening. I think it took longer for DNS to propagate than it did  for me to get the actual wordpress instance up and running with podPress.

That being said, I’m working on the edits now to make each episode into a single mp3, and will start by trying to get at least one old episode a day re-mastered until I’m caught up. With any luck, you’ll be able to download and listen to the shows you missed very soon now.

More news, and a link when it’s fully up (and re-themed and all that jazz). Watch this space for updates….

  • [In The Evening] Pre-empted this week – Sorry all!

    Posted on by Kevin Sonney

For those who tuned in and were all “WTF?” I got bumped for a simulcast of an interview Adam was doing. These things happen, and this week’s show will re-air next week.

I’m bummed, but it does put me a week ahead in the planning, and I’ll need that week when the conventions come around next month….

  • [In The Evening] Playlist for 2011-05-08

    Posted on by Kevin Sonney

This one, if you listen to it without my voiceovers, flows REALLY well from the mad, mad depressing up to a high energy point.

I would like to note that to me, The Ludovico Technique sounds a hell of a lot better in the studio than they did live.[1]

Thanks to Badger and Teighnted for parts of this week’s show. And, as always, thanks to Adam for the opportunity to have a show on the stream.

Welcome To My Nightmare – Victims In Ecstacy
    Hurt – Johnny Cash
    Sally’s Song – Amy Lee
People Are People – Depeche Mode
    Fascination Street – The Cure
    Wound – Velvet Acid Christ
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) – Marilyn Manson
    Marionette – Dr. Steel
Hooker With A Penis – Tool
Make Me Wanna Die – The Pretty Reckless
    Fully Alive – Flyleaf
    Baby Got Back – Throwdown
Heal My Scars – The Ludovico Technique

[1] I feel the same about Melt-Banana, who I saw open for Tool in 2007. I suspect this is more a sound engineer failing than a band failing – having heard both bands live and recorded, it seemed that the sound board operator hadn’t balanced things properly for the acoustics of the space the bands were playing in.

  • Oooh, Shiney!

Spent the last few days decompressing, depressing, and getting the last bits of my last job out of my system. The worst part about this sort of thing isn’t what you did, but what you hadn’t done. Or wanted to do but were unable to do. The unfulfilled and the incomplete. Kind of like when you have a breakup, and you’ve got the things you should have said stuck in your head for a while.

I’ve also had to go through all that lovely paperwork with the ESC and the last of the end-of-job paperwork.

Thankfully, we had in invitation to visit Steve & Merrie for dinner and to borrow from the collection[1].

Dinner was awesome[2]. Thanks to Steve, I now have a very large quantity of music on loan. The box of music[3] I’m importing will keep the show fed for months. And as a bonus, the kids love the Invader Zim toys Steve and Merrie gifted to us.

We’re all very grateful – thanks!

[1] I would like to take a moment to point out that Steve doesn’t collect, so much as he curates. And it is an amazing and awesome collection of music, books, art and other things. I am honored to be able to borrow from it.

[2] If you are in or near Downtown Raleigh, Buku is absolutely AMAZING. Good beer selection, great food, fantastic service, and reasonable prices.

[3] No, really, a box. This is going to take WEEKS to finish importing and sorting this stuff. And the rarities! The hard to finds! The weird, random stuff! I am VERY lucky to be able to borrow these CDs.
